This finding was supported by XPS spectra of the solid phases, which indicated no Mg(II) adsorption onto the biochars from the SPCD matrix. The Fe(II) adsorption onto the SPCD was significantly enhanced by the addition of an equal molar amount of Mg(II). The retention behavior of Mg(II) onto the biochars from both the acidic and neutral SPCD-ADM was superior to that of compost-derived biochars and also Fe(II) adsorption. Based on the water holding capacity of the biochar samples and the chemical composition of their adsorbed layers, the Fe(II)-Mg(II) removal mechanism in the SPCD-ADM was proposed to be the reduction of Fe(III) and adsorption of Mg(II) via electrostatic interactions.
